'SWEENEY TODD' SERVES UP MEAT PIES, CHILLS
Q&A with Stage Veteran Judy Kaye on Touring Role
-------------------------------------------------------

Stage Veteran JUDY KAYE On Her Touring Role in SWEENEY TODDFollowing a successful run on Broadway and several Tony Award nominations, Stephen Sondheim's macabre musical SWEENEY TODD recently began a national tour. Actress Judy Kaye plays the role of Mrs. Lovett, a meat pie maker in Victorian London who falls for Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and cleverly assists him with the grisly task of disposing of his victims. Spotlights & Sightlines recently talked with Kaye about the touring production and the new movie directed by Tim Burton opening in theaters this week.

How would you describe SWEENEY TODD to someone unfamiliar with the musical?
[Sweeney Todd is] a person who has been deeply wronged by a powerful man who sends him to jail for fifteen years while the powerful man destroys his family basically. And this deeply wronged man escapes prison in Australia and comes back to seek revenge. It's about how revenge can eventually destroy you as well. And yet, it's highly entertaining and at times quite funny.

DOCUMENTING THE ROAD TO BROADWAY
Director Dori Berinstein Captures a Year on Film
-------------------------------------------------------

Director Dori BerinsteinShow Business: The Road to Broadway
is a new feature length documentary following the journey of WICKED, AVENUE Q, CAROLINE, OR CHANGE and TABOO from their first steps of the creative process to the Tony Awards. Dori Berinstein, a veteran Broadway producer herself (LEGALLY BLONDE, THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE), directed and produced the documentary.

"It all began growing up loving theatre," Berinstein said. "Then something gelled in college when I read William Goldman's The Season – I began dreaming of being a producer and film director, and that one day when I was able and experienced, that I was going to bring that book to life." It's been an idea that has been with her for a long time. As a producer for almost 15 years, she eventually got around to capturing the 2003/2004 season on film. Along with Alan Deutsch, director of photography, Berinstein practically lived on Broadway during the season.  READ MORE...
